All About Books!

I like reading books. A lot. However, writing reviews about them? Err..not so much. To me, it's to each one's opinion of whether or not they would like the book although I have to admit, at times I look at other's reviews as well. Hence, I might as well try to write book reviews for the following reasons:
1. To help fellow readers choose the best books out there.
2. To improve my writing more. Teehee
In lieu of this, I might as well give out the way of how I will be reviewing the books I've read. Here are the criteria:
By the way, I won't be giving out numerical ratings since I will leave it up to you readers to rate the book with what you think the right rating for that book is. I'm just here to show you the good and bad side of the book and whether you're up to the challenge of picking it up and losing yourself in it. :)

Cray cray for Unique Bread? Bread Story Offers you just that

Cray cray means crazy okay? Hoho.
Before Christmas vacation began, my friend Abby and I went to fellow blogger Laurice's sister's business which brings the scent of heaven that had my tummy both grumbling and excited.

BREAD!

I'm a girl that's head over heels in love with bread. That is why eating bread for me is a treat!

I present to you Bread Story
Bread Story is an international bread store in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Dubai, Australia and now, the Philippines.
Seaweed sushi
During our eat out, I went for their bread that looks like a maki. The bread's named Seaweed Sushi. It's good actually. Who would have thought that bread can substitute for rice when making maki right? It tastes like one too. Inside, there is cucumber, corn, floss, and mayo wrapped in bread and nori.
My friend Abby and fellow blogger Laurice
Me and Abby
For Abby, she got the chocolate filled bread named Chocolate Club. Apart from chocolate covering the top of the bread, the filling is also chocolate as well! She, being a lover of chocolate, said it tasted good. The chocolate filling tasting like ice cream, she took her time eating it while I already finished my Seaweed Sushi and was about to start on my second bread. (Talk about hungry, I know.)

For seconds, I had the Apple Crumble (on the right) and Abby had Hi Amigo (on the left). For my second bread, I like how  it doesn't taste too sweet and the apple bits inside are a little bit tart to combat the sweetness. It's better when served hot. For Abby's she wasn't able to say anything about it. As seen in the photo, it looks like pizza so maybe it tastes like it as well. Still, even when she was full from her first bread, she finished her second up so it could only mean it's good.

Will I go back again? Of course. Most of the bread I see in their menu are quite new to me and I want to taste them all. Also, Bread Story offers cookies, loaves, tarts and cakes as well. When we got there, it was only the second day of opening so there were still no cakes. As seen in their Facebook page, their cakes truly look good and I want to taste their tarts as well as their pandan loaf! Pricing is quite similar to BreadTalk, which makes it a good competitor to the established brand. Being a newcomer in the market, Bread Story holds a lot of promises and stories shared through a cup of coffee and exquisite breads.

Color Manila Run. Can't Wait!

Starting this year, I'm slowly becoming slightly addicted to keeping fit through running. I wasn't really a runner to begin with but I have been interested in runs that have a certain twist.

Having joined this run last September

I can't wait for this other run which will happen on the 6th of January 2013.

To have your interest piqued, here's a teaser of what Color Manila Run is about.

Resolution to self

Now that I've bought another set of batteries as well as a battery charger, I can finally lug my camera anywhere (hooray)! There has been a lot of incidents that I really wanted to take a picture of but sadly, I don't have a phone that has a built-in camera. Now that I've got an extra set of batteries, I can finally take photos of those quirky moments! Hoho.

Expect photos on my posts soon. Teehee

Keeping the Mind Awake

I remember my aunts telling me that in order to keep a sharp mind, they play crosswords. What I like most about this is that every time I see a newspaper inside their home, the crossword puzzle's always filled out. I look into the words and most of them are words that are totally not in my vocabulary. It's fun to look at these words because it opens up my vocabulary even more. I tried answering crosswords before but all the words I am ever going to get are around 2-3 max. I keep thinking if my aunts do have dictionaries in their heads that they haven't mentioned. I really recommend crosswords to all because it really can be quite challenging because the word you may think would fit the clue, cannot fit the boxes! Then, you must think of another word that will fit both description and the number of boxes. Also, it helps broaden your vocabulary because, depending on the difficulty, totally unheard-of words may appear.
-- crosswords puzzles crossword newspaper pen newspapers pens puzzle
However, crosswords are not the only activity that can help you sharpen your memory. There are a lot of games actually that can help. Sudoku, Scrabble, Chess and a lot more stimulate those neurons inside your head and gets your gears into action. These games are not boring because of the following reasons:
  • They challenge the mind. These games may not be a physical activity but instead, what is getting worked out is your brain so it's still a win situation.
  • It is a good past time. When you are just lazying around at work or at home, you can just grab a newspaper and start answering the puzzles. In a way, it's both relaxing and a learning experience.
  •  Bragging rights. Yes, you read it right. Not a lot of people are motivated to finish a crossword puzzle especially if it is really hard. But no matter what, if you persevere, you can finish one. Just think of it, others would just quit and you're the only one left sitting down with the pen still poised to write more and fill up those boxes.
  • You can make it a competition. You can invite friends to play with you and the winner gets a prize. In a way, you can bond with others while still managing to work your mind out.
Just because people will tell you that such things are for adults, they are wrong. That's why there are difficulties presented for each age group. These activities help the mind work out and keep awake.

Voice Out

Honestly, it is during college that I fully realize how important my voice is. Not only am I a Communications student, I also like to sing, talk and laugh with my friends. Today, I lost my voice due to cheering too much for my block but you know what? It was worth it. We won the competition! Thus, today, the half part of my body is aching quite bad and yet the euphoria I was feeling last night is still coursing in my veins. Not only that, my group writing a paper for UNIV will also be progressing to the nationals! Talk about achievements right? I'm not boasting or anything. I'm just really happy with the current events happening in my life. Who would have thought that past the ache I was feeling, such good things will come? Thank God for these positive things! Anyway, back to my voice.

I wasn't really a talkative person but boy do I miss talking without having to clear my throat every time. Today, my throat's really itchy and a little bit painful. I just hope I didn't do any damage to my voice or else I won't be able to sing well anymore. After screaming so much yesterday, I'm really scared that I might have damaged my vocal cords somehow but I hope not. I like singing so much that losing the ability to sing frightens me. I might not have a good singing voice but still, I like to sing. Anyhoo, I want to keep a positive outlook and hopefully I won't lose my voice.

What's keeping me busy these days

Honestly, I haven't been blogging much lately because of this one particular hobby of mine that I really can't get enough of.

Tumblr_lzb9cjg15v1qzhokmo1_r1_400_large
Indeed, reading has been keeping me very occupied this sembreak that I can't get through the day without reading or finishing the book I've been reading or if it's a series, I would gobble them all up just to satiate my craving for it. With all the books I've read during this break, I don't know which of them would I be able to write a review about. Also, I can't update my story as well because I'm sucked up into the story of the book! Oh my, books do consume me and I've been jumping from one book to another as soon as I finish it.

Clean-Up Reminisce

Cleaning up can be very tedious and yet exciting. As you sort up piles ane piles of supposedly trash, out of it all you would discover interesting things from the past. As we are cleaning, we happen to find countless magazines, old letters to my brothers, old letters of my brothers, countless receipts, movie tickets since 2005 and the oldest of all is my dad's address book filled with sweet words towards my mom dating back 1979.

Looking at those, it showed their lives back then and what kind of persons my family was. It also showed another side of them, especially my father, that I was not accustomed to. Seeing his letters to my mom, it made me realize just from where my siblings and I got our love for writing from. It also made me realize that though we show a tough side to others, we are certified suckers when expressing ourselves especially with words. Those letters just showed how we really are not that outspoken with our feelings and we can only express them when a sheet of paper or at the back of a notebook is present.

Looking at old stuff can truly bring back memories. Not only does it help you remember the past, but it also helps you learn about those around you more. It gives you a whole new perspective to what kind of person they truly are. Who knew that cleaning up can do that?

Hello Once More!

Finally, after spending so many sleepless nights dedicating them all to schoolwork, I now have the chance once more to fill these spaces with my thoughts, opinions, happenings, etc. I really can't say that I'm thrilled but I am really overjoyed that I can write not because it's required but just for the sake of writing.

Though I really can't say I'm on sembreak yet. I still have one more major, not related to academic, paper to go. Even so, I have been celebrating happy days with a lot of people. So, yeah. :))

I'm still at the door of sembreak, holding the knob but still quite not turning it. Hope that by the end of this week, I get to enter and explore its wonders.

Never Forgotten: Passed and Lived on

To cap of my recent semester, here's a reflection paper on one of my class. I am sharing it to the world because I want people to realize something: that what you learn in school should not remain only on its four walls but should be spread out and acknowledged by others.

____________________________________________________________________________________

With the end of another semester, it is once more a make it or break it situation. Students stressed and anxious to know whether they passed the semester that ended. Once the students see that they passed, a lot rejoice for having survived another semester of their university year. By the start of the second semester, minds are, at times, almost wiped clean of the teachings from the past semester in order to make room for new learning the coming semester to cram their minds with. However, there are certain lessons during the past semester that is and should be carried on, not only on to the next semester, but for the rest of their lives. There are indeed subjects where the lessons learned can be lived out of the classroom and should be imbued into our lives.
One such subject is ethics. Our professor told us from the very beginning that it is a practical subject; it is to be applied in real life. Indeed, this is true. Ethical actions are easy to act out since man already has the knowledge of what is good and bad. However, with the recent situation of the world, being ethical is getting harder and at times being ethical is easier said than done. A lot of issues these days instill doubts on people; thus, they do not know whether their act is ethically good or not. Before the course, I am also confused with certain issues and through this course, even the smallest unethical ones are revealed. One case is the actions with a double effect. I never knew that once an action has a good and bad effect, there are certain conditions that need to be considered. Through this subject, these confusions are more or less cleared and the big question is: with these things in mind, are we prepared to live it out in our daily lives? As persons who sought out self-fulfillment, we should keep to what’s ethical.
In light of this, the lessons from this course should not only remain theoretical but should be practiced. That is what ethics is: a practical course. Since man, in his nature, already knows the essence of ethics, this course serves to refresh to man the actions proper to his nature as well as help others attain self-fulfillment as well. Such lessons in life should not be forgotten: it is the way we all could develop for the good. In my opinion, that is how men would be able to flourish and with their flourishing, the community may prosper.

Sway by Bic Runga Cover

Thanks so much for the encouragement peeps!
Right now, I still am in the midst of drowning in university requirements but soon I'd be victorious and a survivor of this sem's hardships. Thank you so much for the comments. It really helped me. Hoho :3

For now, here's another cover from a really frustrated singer. I'm really sorry that I got the timing off and even the lyrics wrong as well. Credits to the background sound. So, here:

-HiATUS MODE-

So.. Since we are currently experiencing what we university students call "Hell Week", I don't have the time to update my blog. With all the excitement of writing papers, deadlines, exams and what-nots, the next time that I will be updating may be on the second week of October. In the meantime, wish us students luck as we endeavor to pass all our requirements and after all this, be able to enjoy our well-deserved break. Cheerio for now!

Who Should Make the Move? A Question for Both Guys and Girls.

Seriously, this issue has been popping on my head for some time now. Currently, I'm in no relationship and as what my mind keeps telling me, I do not have the time for it. But for those who are single and considering on entering into one, I wanna ask both your opinions: who should make the move?

I do not intend this question to be in the context of who should ask someone to be his/her partner, but what I want to know is whether who should establish the connection first: the boy or the girl?

Even til these days, the most prominent condition I see is that the boys are the ones who notice the girls first. Then, they get to know her by spending time with her and the likes. But, the relationship they form can go two ways (especially if the guy sends signals from the beginning that he likes the girl): either 1.They proceed to being a couple or 2. They melt into being strangers once more. However, there are cases wherein the relationship remains in what I personally call the "stagnant mode" where the two neither lose the other but they do not move to being more. With some situations that came into view, those that keep the relationship even if it's getting nowhere are the girls. At first, when boys are the ones who keep chasing, the girls are the ones who try to avoid (based on the situations that I know of). However, as time passes, the girls are the ones who now chase after the guy. They keep on talking to the guy and at times, they are the ones who do something in order to be around the guy. And that's where I need your opinions people.

Should the girls be the one to keep the relationship? Or should they step down and let the boys be the one to think of means to keeping it? Should they keep it stagnant, move on or just let go?

I'm not saying that the guys are doing nothing, but when it comes to effort, the thing I see today is that the girls are the ones who keep on stopping what they do just so they can be with that person, especially if she begins to develop some feelings for him. I don't know. Maybe I'm still living in the century where girls just sit and wait for the guy to do everything but today, it's different. I'm not dissing on either parties, I just want to know.

I'm really open to answers from both sides because I am really confused. I do not intend to start a debate between males and females but I just want to learn what your opinions are considering this. This may not be such an issue but I'm just really curious. And because of this, my comments box is totally open and you're free to post your opinions! Hoping to hear a little enlightenment from you guys.

Staying Positive, Keeping Positive: How To Get Through A Tough Day

These days, I have been feeling really down because of certain events and at times, it really gets to me and by the end of the day, I feel very sad. I can't do anything right and by the end, I just sit down and stare into space. However, I was going through my planner, I found this step of managing stress and I decided to try it out:

Take perspective, express gratitude: Identify three to five things to be grateful for daily (even the smallest things count). While stressful moments are demoralizing and can make you feel like the world is ending, you have surely gone through many more uplifting moments. Be thankful for those.

Having read this, I immediately jotted down the happy things that happened that day, and indeed! It does help uplift the spirit since you would have never thought that there are still good things that can come up from such a bad day. As such, I always do this step every day, whether I'm experiencing  a bad or a good one, in order for me to keep on having a positive outlook on life and to not let that day bring me down.

Can We Hold On To This Thing Called Love?: Strangers Book Review

I bought this book during the previous sale in Fully Booked The Fort branch for 50 php, which is really cheap, mind you. It's such a good steal right? However, that price really fits the book. If you are to read this, do not close your mind to things that may happen and judge the characters for what they have done.

      SUMMARY:
Everything was dark again, and he had an instant's recall of the hours they had clung together.
They were taking her away now.
Steve blinked up into the painful brightness of the light.
'Annie,'  he said. 'I love you.'
This novel revolved mainly on the life of Annie as she lived her daily routine as a wife and a mother. During Christmas, as she was shopping, an unexpected bombing happened in the very store she was in and it collapsed around her. Luckily for her, another person named Steve is alive and he became her consolidation underneath the rubble and fear. Out of this incident, love bloomed between the two and it is up to Annie to choose between her family and her love for the man she shared this accident with.

      REVIEW:
Annie is living the not-so-perfect but a good family life together with her husband and her two kids. As she was out doing some Christmas shopping, a bomb exploded in the shop she was in. A man named Steve was also trapped in the rubble together with her and in the darkness, their relationship developed as the two began sharing with each other their secrets, their lives, even the little things they do. Because of this, a connection was established between them, stronger and unexplainable than that of being friends. They were strangers trapped and yet became something more in the short space they were allowed to move, only their fingers being the source of comfort for one another.
In my opinion, having someone as a companion especially in this kind of accident is good because they can be your source of hope and strength. What I don't get however is that both Annie and Steve fell in love with each other in just a short span of time. Maybe it's because they got to know each other so well that they suddenly developed that feeling however Annie should have stopped herself from being so because she is already married and a mother to boot. When she got out, she should have just told herself to remain only as a friend to Steve and to not develop her feelings for him. I was really angry at her because she already has a good life and yet she is up to the point of destroying it just for the sake of love. She is, in my opinion, a really selfish person because even though she did consider her children, she still left them to go to Steve, deceived and hurt her husband. 'Doesn't her ten-year marriage mean anything to her?' That line was always on my mind as I continued reading the book and even though I was really mad, I still decided to finish it. By the end, I'm glad I did  finish it because (SPOILER: highlight at your own risk) she decided to stay with her family and her husband, which I truly and really adore, welcomed her back.
The character that I loved in this book is her husband, Martin. He is such a good person that even though his wife cheated on him twice: first is before their wedding and the second is with Steve, he still accepted her and loved her. That sort of person is really rare and Annie should be thankful for having such a husband. In this book, you can really see the contrast between the personality of the couple. This stark contrast just shows how love can work and compensate for the deficiencies of the other.

Come to think of it, this book also shows its readers how women are also subject to the same sin of infidelity as men and although it's quite hard to accept, we women are prone to doing the same stuff such as cheating as well. In my opinion, I think this book tells us that women should be forgiving, even though it is hard, and men should consider what it would feel like if their wives were the ones cheating on them. Overall, couples should not cheat the other because you've already given your entire self to the other, why search for other people to share your entirety with when you already have someone who will share it with you?

I'd give this book a 3.5/5 because for me, I really despised Annie's character. But why didn't I give it a lower rank? Well, Martin was the saving grace of this book because even though his wife cheated on him time and time again, he still held on to her and never let her go that by the end, she came back to him.

Surviving the Zombie Outbreak: Outbreak Manila @ Bonifacio Global City

Have you ever tried or considered running for your life? Ever wondered what's it like to be chased by the undead? Well, that is what Outbreak Manila presented to thousands of runners a new perspective of fun run, and this time, it's either you survive or get eaten, well, not literally.

This is the first run I've joined in my entire life and all I can say is that for the price, it's worth it.

Here's a photo of me and my brother's fiancee's brother together with a pretty bride, except for the fact that's she's an undead.

Overall, it's a really fun experience even though I ended up having multiple injuries in the hands and knees but it's all good. Even the rain made it thrilling although it is also one of the reasons why I have these injuries.  Also, I think it would be even fun if we were at an earlier wave since the zombies during our wave were cured due to the rain and were already tired of eating humans, er I mean flags ;).

So, will I join again? A big YES but in the next outbreak, I wish to be infected and be part of the undead.

Heads Up And Hats Down!

g-a-p-z:
Nakita ko na ‘to eh, kaso di na lang din ako nagsasalita. Pero dahil nabubuyset na ako sa inaasta ng mga Tomasino dito, eh ayan.
Guys, bata ‘to.
Guys, does it make you any better than her? Alam nyo na ngang nagiging immature sya about this, tapos papatulan nyo pa. ‘Yung totoo?
Pakita nyong di totoo yang sinasabi nyan. Makaasta kayo para nang pinapatunayan nyong tama sya eh.
At sa Thomasians pala siya nainis.

This issue has been over and done for weeks ago but I must say, I'm hats down to the 13-year old girl because she was able to make nationwide rumble. Of course, a lot of university students were outraged but then again, what she did showed how some students tend to be immature for being wound up by such words from a thirteen-year old. I truly admire what she did because she does have the freedom to do that and she never backed down from what she said. She handled the issue with confidence and stood by her word. As for those who were deeply hurt by her words, they decided to ruin her life by making fake Facebook profiles of her which I think is very unwise because that action just shows what kind of attitude these people have. I don't have anything against the schools she may have attacked, rather I even admire them, and she's already sorry for the things she said, but when I see what the people have said to her, I really can't help myself but post this because if you weren't affected in any way at all, you wouldn't be responding to such words, rather, you would just talk to her about it.If she still continues on, it's not in your hands anymore because if you think about it, who would give credit, that those people from known universities suck, and believe the words of an ordinary thirteen-year old girl immediately?

Am I My Sister's Keeper?

:
I've read this book many years ago but even until now, it is one of THE BOOKS that would truly stick not only in your mind but in your heart as well.

     SUMMARY
Anna Fitzegarld's older sister Kate suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia. Her parents bore Anna for the sake of her older sister; to be the donor of the latter. From Anna's conception until now, from her umbilical cord to her blood marrow, more is asked of her. In this book, she struggles to find out who she truly is and what is her role in this world.

     WHAT I THOUGHT OF IT?

This book is really good in terms of plot and character. The characters feel so alive it is as if the story is a recounting of a true to life story and was not only inspired by it. You can feel the tension between each and every member of the family as they try to maintain the facade of a happy family and yet deep inside, they are already falling apart. In this book, current issues such as adolescence, drugs and the likes are presented. Yet even these things kept them from having a perfect relationship with one another, these flaws in fact are the ones that draw them closer to each other once they realized their faults and reconciled it. And yet, one unexpected event happens and from this, their family realizes how life can change in an instant.

The character I really liked in this book is Anna. You would truly feel the pressure on young Anna, a 13-year old girl, whose older sister Kate suffers from a rare form of leukemia which left her really sick and dependent on donors. Not even her parents nor her brother Jesse can donor for her, hence their parents, Sara and Brian decided to conceive a "designer baby" that would solve the problem of who would donor for Kate. Thus, Anna was born. When Anna started to think of what her role is in this world, she keeps on seeing Kate as she knows that that is her role: to be Kate's donor. However, Anna has had enough. Anna decided to be medically emancipated because this time, her kidney is the one being requested of her. I really like her character because for a 13-year old, Anna is really strong. She also loves her sister very much that even until the end of the book, what she has done is requested by Kate. At a young age, Anna is left with such a big responsibility because without  her, Kate would die. She decided to come to a lawyer, Campbell, in order to help her with her case. By the end of the story, one good thing happens to Anna but one incident will change their lives forever.
a scene from the movie (left: Anna, Kate, Brian)

When I first read this, I was really set to finish it because of the medical terms I see that are present in most chapters. Since I am an avid fan of all things related to medicine, I decided to continue on reading it. As I keep on reading it, I feel pity for both sisters and a little bit of annoyance with the mother. Progressing further, I started to get why the mother acted that way, how the brother came to be like that and how the father can sometimes be uncertain. When I finished reading this book, all I could do was cry. Even as I read it over and over, my tears would spill every single time I finish it. Since I do not cry easily when it comes to books or movies, this book gripped my heart so much. I give it a 5/5 since not all books can touch the heart. There is a film adaptation of this book if you want to check it out although for me, the book is better. .If you're experiencing family problems, this book would open your mind and heart that sometimes, you just need to support each other, get past the flaws of each member and love each other for who they are.
